Police, Fred Jackson deny report that race led to accident outside Seahawks headquarters

RENTON – Police say there’s no evidence to suggest that Seahawks running back Fred Jackson was racing a teammate when his car crashed into a street sign just outside the team’s headquarters Tuesday evening.

A statement from the Renton Police Department called it a one-car accident and confirmed that Jackson was uninjured.

The accident occurred just before 5 p.m, around the time Seahawks players were leaving the Virginia Mason Athletic Center (VMAC), where the team practices. An initial report from the website TMZ.com indicated that Jackson and fellow Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch were racing. Jackson later denied that he was racing, stating in a Tweet that he lost control of his car and that multiple teammates – including Lynch – stopped to check on him.

The statement from Renton police also called that report false. The statement read, in part: “Early news releases indicated that Jackson was racing another team member and was removed from the scene by team security before officers could investigate. These reports are false. As of this time, there is no indication that Jackson was racing another vehicle. He remained on scene until officers could speak to him. He was polite and cooperative.”

Jackson was taken back to the VMAC after the accident to be evaluated by the team’s medical staff, according to police.

The Seahawks had no official comment on the incident.

It’s the second time in a week that a Seahawk has been involved in a car accident while leaving the VMAC. Fullback Derrick Coleman was arrested last Wednesday on suspicion of felony vehicular assault and hit and run following a two-car crash in Bellevue. The team suspended Coleman indefinitely pending further information and reinstated him on Tuesday.

Jackson’s accident took place near an intersection located a few hundred yards from the VMAC. Police said his 2016 Chevrolet Corvette lost control as it drove southbound on Seahawks Way – which is a dead-end road that leads in and out of the VMAC – then struck a metal pole and ended up across the street on Lake Washington Boulevard North.

The metal pole – which included a street sign and a stop sign – was embedded in the front of Jackson’s car after the collision. A tow-truck operator used a winch to pull the pole off Jackson’s car (as seen in the video atop this story) before towing the car away.

The Seahawks signed Jackson, 34, in September following his release from Buffalo, where he spent the first nine seasons of his career. He and Lynch were teammates with the Bills before Lynch was traded to Seattle.
